No 19 seed Cameron Norrie defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 11 seed, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the last 16 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Saturday night.

The British star dictated play right from the off and secured his place in the last 16 of the Australian Open for the very first time.

“Honestly, it was so special, I’ve practised once on this court and I didn’t realise there’d be this atmosphere,” he said afterwards.

“I had to play really brave. In the second set Casper served well and fought hard…I kept a really good level throughout the match. I stuck to my game plan, I really enjoyed it, and I got through.”

Norrie, ranked No 22, will play the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 6 seed, and American Alex Michelsen next.

Cameron Norrie won against Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas (6-4, 6-4, 6-2) and eventually overcame Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri (3-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4, 6-4) in the previous rounds.
