Diego Schwartzman and Benoit Paire ended their 2023 in encouraging fashion with some good performances in UTS but the duo went out at the first time of asking in qualifying for the Australian Open on Tuesday.

Argentina’s Schwartzman, seeded No 11, was beaten 7-6 (9), 6-4 by American Denis Kudla while 12th seed Paire was upended 7-6 (6), 6-4 by fellow Frenchman Jules Marie, a 32-year-old who took six years off the Tour before returning to the circuit with a YouTube channel documenting his efforts.

There was better luck for another former top 10 star, David Goffin, as the Belgian eased through his opener, beating Stefano Travaglia of 6-4, 7-5 while two Britons, Ryan Peniston and Billy Harris, earned impressive victories.

Frenchamn Hugo Gaston and Maxime Cressy of the United States, begin their qualifying campaigns on Wednesday.
