Italy’s debutant Lorenzo Sonego served up a surprise to big-hitting American Reilly Opelka as he put his nation 1-0 up in their tie in Turin thanks to a 6-3, 7-6(4) straight-sets win.
The 26-year-old benefited from a noisy partisan crowd – in the city where he was born.
Opelka served 12 aces but also three double faults, making 23 unforced errors over the Group E match, which lasted 89 minutes.
