“The whole team gave 100%. There is a lot of work behind the scenes” – Sinner on Italy’s Davis Cup win

World No 1 Jannik Sinner and former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini have lauded the entire team that helped Italy win its second consecutive Davis Cup title over the weekend. Italy defeated Netherlands 2-0 on Sunday after singles victories by Sinner and Berrettini. This was the third Davis Cup title for the Italians in the history of the competition.

“Every year is different feelings”, said Sinner, who defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6, 6-2 in the second match to clinch the title, as quoted by the Davis Cup website. “Obviously coming back as defending champions and winning again, it’s one of the best feelings I think for all of us. Of course having Matteo here as a player and as a teammate, it’s a bit different. So I’m very happy and glad that we managed this. But the whole team gave 100%. There is a lot of work behind the scenes. Very tough decisions for Filippo, also. So we are very happy to lift this trophy and of course to go into the preseason with a bunch of confidence boosts. We are all very happy.”

Berrettini opened the final with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Botic van de Zandschulp in the first singles to give the Italians a positive start, 12 months after he was forced to cheer his teammates from the sidelines due to injuries.

“Last year was really nice to be here, but at same time, I remember a moment, like, why did I come? I wasn’t part of the team 100 percent, but I’m competitive and I want to be part of the team,” Berrettini said. “But then at the end of the day, after the whole week, I said it was really important for you to come, because I support them, because I was really happy for them, but also for me. I took so much energy from those matches. I once again realised how much I care about Davis Cup. And living those moments I took all this energy, and I was, like, okay, next year, you’re going to be here, you’re going to be fighting for Italy. I used that as an engine for the training sessions and everything that happened afterwards.”
