Tennis, as one of the world’s most-watched sports, has inspired various game themes due to its recognisable structure and global fanbase. Right after the end of this year’s Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the tennis year, we can say it once again: tennis is an exciting sport.

The tournament offered a great deal of excitement for fans worldwide. The women’s title was won by the No 19 in the world, Madison Keys, who beat Iga Swiatek and two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka to claim the title.

The 2025 Australian Open also showed us the best version of Alexander Zverev, who reached the final and claimed, for the first time, the No 2 ranking. It also showed us that Novak Djokovic, even over time, is still a great player who can beat everybody, if he can stay fit.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that a sport as exciting as tennis proves to be time and time again, and with such a huge following (tennis is estimated to be the fourth most viewed sport worldwide), is considered perfect to be the central theme for a slot game.

Slot games are often inspired by various cultural references, like history, movies, video games. As, for example, the Irish lottery results are constantly proving, given the inspiration the lottery draws from Irish heritage and culture. And there are many more examples: movies, books, TV series, sports.

In the case of tennis, the fast-paced nature of the game and its widespread fame are the main reasons why it is the centrepiece of various famous slot games. There are many parts of a tennis game that are perfect to be translated into a slot game: the ace, for example, may indicate that a big prize has been won. Or even the tiebreak, which is meant to decide which player is winning the set after they played all the games in it.

Even just looking at the basic point system in tennis, one would see how interesting it is: there are games, and then sets. To win a game one must score four points, which are counted: 15, 30, 40, and then the game-winning point. Each game then goes into the score of a “set”, which is a set of games. The number of games necessary to win is normally six, but if both players win six games in a set, there’s a seventh game (a tiebreak) that will crown one of the two players as the winner of the set. Then, the first player that wins two or three sets, depending on the tournament, wins the game.

All of these small things are used to make a slot game more interesting. And besides the scoring system, there’s a lot of star power in tennis and a lot of tradition. For example, slot games may draw inspiration from the most famous courts in the tennis circuit.

The first that comes to mind is Wimbledon’s centre court, which has one of the most alluring atmospheres in the tennis world and that is probably the most important court in the world, and that exudes what is now called “aura”. Namely, it has some sort of indistinct feature about it, that makes it effortlessly special.

But there are many others, like the Court Philippe-Chatrier, the centre court at Roland Garros, and the most important clay court in the world; or the Stadio Nicola Pietrangeli in Rome, widely considered as one of the most beautiful, and quite surely the most elegant court in the whole tennis circuit. A slot game with a setting that is inspired by one of these stadiums is sure to draw the player’s attention.

All of these elements are perfect to create a compelling and fun slot game, with modern-day technology, together with the excitement that tennis can bring. These elements help create slot games designed to engage players through dynamic features and visually appealing themes. The entertainment of the game is brought from the court to the digital world, unifying the best characteristics of both different worlds.
