Why was Roger Federer off the tour for 13 months?

After reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2020, Federer announced he needed an operation on his right knee and underwent arthroscopic surgery in February. In July, he said he had needed a second operation and only returned to the Tour in Doha, in March. He took more time off, played in Geneva and then Roland-Garros before returning to Wimbledon, where has won the title eight times.

“So now I just have to take it step by step I have to first walk again properly, run properly, then do the side steps, all the agility work, and then eventually I’m going to be back on the tennis court, but it’s going to take me a few more months and then we’ll see how things are at some point next year but I have to take my time.”
