Novak Djokovic, the top seed, outlasted Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 23 seed, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros on Monday evening.
The world No 1 will now face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 7 seed.
The 37-year-old Serb previously defeated French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert (6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-4), Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-4, 6-1, 6-2) and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 30 seed (7-5, 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0).
Cerundolo, ranked No 27, reached the fourth round by beating German Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 6-3, 6-4), Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic (6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-0) and American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2).
