Dane Holger Rune, the No. 10 seed, defeated American wildcard Emilio Nava 6–3, 7–6(5), 6–3 to reach the third round of Roland-Garros on Wednesday evening.

The Dane, who has reached the second week every time he has played the French Open since 2022, avoided the upset against a former Challenger-level opponent. Nava received a wildcard thanks to an agreement between the organizers of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

Rune broke Nava’s serve four times—at least once per set. That was enough to wrap up the first set comfortably. However, he was broken once in the second set and needed a tiebreak to secure it. In the third, Rune was up a break and serving for a 4–1 lead but failed to consolidate, losing his advantage.

Rune – Halys next

He managed to regroup quickly, broke back, and closed out the match in straight sets. It was a far less dramatic second round than in 2024, when he defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli in five sets after trailing 5–0 in the final-set tiebreak.

“It was important to be in charge of the points”, Rune told the reports after the match. “Because he’s playing very well when he’s having time, especially on his forehand. It was all about taking the backhand up the line and moving him as much as possible and coming to the net every time I had the chance. So very happy on my focus today.”

Rune, currently ranked No. 10, will next face Frenchman Quentin Halys. “It’s always very very intense here when the French crowd is on fire, so that’s going to be exciting. I have to get ready for mentally also for that challenge, because it’s not just gonna be about the tennis. It takes another part. Just focusing on my game, on what I wanted to develop.”
