Roland-Garros: Tiafoe beats Altmaier to book spot in quarter-finals with a “crazy stat”

Frances Tiafoe, the No 15 seed, defeated German Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to move into the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros, confirming a his great shape.
“I’m playing great, man, Tiafoe smiled after the match. “I feel in a great place. I’m just happy being out there. I’m loving the competing and playing super aggressive. Making the game simple.”
“Just give them what the game gives me and try to play the right way, the way I know how, at my best, and living and dying with the results. It’s going my way right now.”

This is Tiafoe’s fifth Grand Slam quarterfinal, following the 2019 Australian Open and the 2022 to 2024 US Opens, tying Taylor Fritz for the most appearances at this stage among active American players.
After Paul defeated Popyrin, Tiafoe is the second American player qualified for the quarter finals, the highest number at this stage at the French Open since 1995 (Andre Agassi and Michael Chang).
Tiafoe, ranked No 16, will face the winner of the match between Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 8 seed, and Dane Holger Rune, the No 10 seed. This match was scheduled on the night session on Sunday.
Tiafoe : “Let’s win”
The American is still maintaining his clean sheet, having defeated Russian Roman Safiullin (6-4, 7-5, 6-4), Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta (6-4, 6-3, 6-1), and No. 23 seed Sebastian Korda (7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-4).6-3, 6-4).
“I feel really good, he said after the match. “Obviously it’s a pretty crazy stat, but I mean, I’m just counting the wins. I’m not really thinking about the sets.”
“I don’t think anyone is really thinking that I was going to even be in this position. But at the same time, I mean, I don’t really look at it like house money. Now that I’m here, I’m like, Let’s win. Let’s keep winning. There’s nothing more fun than winning. You know, once I get my feet going and matches under me, I’m dangerous. Then I’m feeling really good, and I’ll play anybody.”
