Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 10 seed, showcased a dominant performance on Thursday, defeating Belgian veteran David Goffin in a straight-sets rout, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the third round of the US Open.

The win on the Louis-Armstrong Stadium in New York marked Musetti’s first back-to-back victories since his run to the Roland-Garros semifinals earlier this year. With the victory, the Italian has now recorded his 30th Grand Slam match win, becoming the 10th Italian man to achieve the feat.

Musetti, who reached his career-high rank of No. 6 earlier this season, entered the match with a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Goffin. He had previously defeated the Belgian at the 2022 US Open, coming back from a 2-5 deficit in the deciding set. This time, however, Musetti left no room for a comeback.

Musetti’s authority

The opening set saw a competitive exchange, with Musetti’s serve coming under pressure as Goffin secured two of his break point opportunities. However, the Italian’s aggressive returning paid off, and he converted three of his six chances to take the first set 6-4.

From that point on, Musetti found an extra gear and ran away with the match. He broke Goffin’s serve three times to bagel his opponent in the second set, displaying a relentless offensive game. The Italian continued his momentum into the final set, where he broke Goffin twice more to close out the match decisively.

Best result at the US Open

The statistics highlight Musetti’s control and efficiency throughout the contest. He hit 27 winners and served four aces. On the other side of the net, Goffin struggled to contain the Italian’s attack, winning only two of his eleven break points. Musetti, by comparison, converted eight of his twelve break point opportunities.

Musetti equals his best US Open result by reaching the third round for the third time in his career (2022, 2024, 2025). The No. 10 seed joins fellow Italian Jannik Sinner to be the first Italian duo to be Top 10 seeds in men’s singles in US Open history.

Musetti will next face the winner of the match between American Jenson Brooksby and his countryman Flavio Cobolli, the No. 24 seed. He will aim to reach the Round of 16 at Flushing Meadows for the first time in his career.
