Sinner feels better but is ‘not yet at 100%’ ahead of the start of the US Open
Ill, Jannik Sinner retired in the Cincinnati Masters 1000 final against Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner was last seen struggling with illness in the Cincinnati final, where he ultimately retired while trailing 5-0 against Carlos Alcaraz. On Friday in New York, two days before the start of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, the Italian star reappeared with a smile for the press.
The defending champion could lose his world No. 1 ranking at the US Open if Carlos Alcaraz, his closest rival in the ATP standings, performs better than him at Flushing Meadows. When asked about his physical condition, Sinner reassured everyone, though he admitted he still needs some time to get back to full fitness.
“First of all, I’m very happy to be back here. It’s a fantastic tournament. Of course, it’s the last Grand Slam of the season, so naturally, motivation is very high. Physically, I feel good. I’m almost fully recovered, even if I’m not yet at 100%, but we hope to be ready in a few days. Everything should go well for the tournament.”
“The case is closed” regarding Umberto Ferrara
Jannik Sinner arrived in New York with his team, which now once again includes Umberto Ferrara since the Cincinnati tournament. The fitness coach, who was involved in the Italian player’s doping case in the summer of 2024, had not worked with the world No. 1 for a year. Sinner’s decision to bring him back sparked much discussion, but the player chose not to comment further at Friday’s press conference.
“As for Umberto, we’ve said everything in our statement. I don’t want to make any further comments on the matter. I think this issue is now behind us. We’re focused on our work again and trying to improve as athletes. That’s what matters most right now.”
Jannik Sinner will begin his title defense at the US Open on Monday against Czech player Vit Kopriva.
