Sweeny, ranked No. 123, puts out Musetti and reaches a first Grand Slam third round
Dane Sweeny lost the first set to Lorenzo Musetti and then took eighteen of the next twenty-three games, beating last year’s quarter-finalist 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. The Australian wild card, ranked No. 123, is into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time, and Musetti is the fifth seed to leave this draw before the weekend.

Lorenzo Musetti is out of the US Open. The No. 13 seed lost 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to Dane Sweeny, an Australian wild card ranked No. 123, on Thursday evening, taking the first set and winning five games after it. He now plays Italian Luciano Darderi, the No. 21 seed.
For Sweeny it is the first Grand Slam third round of his career. For Musetti, a quarter-finalist here last year, it is a second-round exit at the sixth attempt at this tournament.
Sweeny reached the second round without completing a match. He led Frenchman Corentin Moutet 7-6 (4), 6-4, 3-0 in the first round when the Frenchman retired, so Thursday was the first Grand Slam match he has played to a conclusion in this main draw.
Musetti, Another seed gone
Musetti is the latest name to leave a draw that has been emptying since Sunday. Novak Djokovic, the No. 4 seed, lost in the first round to Mariano Navone. Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No. 3 seed and last year’s semi-finalist, went out to Karen Khachanov on the same evening as Musetti. Arthur Fils, the No. 10 seed and Cincinnati champion, lost his opening match.
Rafael Jodar, the No. 12 seed, was beaten in straight sets by a lucky loser. Brandon Nakashima, the No. 16 seed and the tour leader in hard-court wins this season, went out in the second round.
