Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 5 seed, won against American Alycia Parks 6-0, 6-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Monday to move into the second round of the US Open.

Andreeva needed only 55 minutes to overcome Parks, who was all over the place, spraying 28 unforced errors.

The Russian, on the other hand, was up to the task as she broke her opponent six times with the help of six winners and a 74 percent average on the second-serve return.

Parks came into the match on the back of an impressive semi-final run in Monterrey, where she downed top seed Emma Navarro. Andreeva, wary of the American’s form, employed aggressive tennis on Monday to cruise through.

“I was super nervous before coming into this match,” the winner began in her on-court interview. “I saw her last results and she has been playing super great. It’s always very hard to start a Grand Slam, first round matches are super tricky. So, I was just trying to tell myself to be confident to go for my shots, not to rush but at the same time play aggressive.”

“I have a great team around me. I’m still learning how to take all of this calmly, match by match. So, still learning but I can see progress and that’s what makes me happy. I try to work every day to get better. I’m just happy that today was one of the days when I showed myself that it’s been paying off.”

Andreeva, ranked No 5, will face Russian Anastasia Potapova next.
