US Open: Atmane cramps, is refused treatment, and loses a two-set lead to Munar!

Terence Atmane has beaten Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune on Tour. He has never won a match at a Grand Slam. On Sunday evening he led Spaniard Jaume Munar by two sets, and then cramped so badly that he served underarm with the wrong hand, was refused treatment by a tournament physio, and lost 6-7 (5), 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in five hours to fall to 0-7 in Grand Slam first rounds.

Two sets up, Atmane began cramping across his whole body. His left hand, the one he plays with, seized to the point that he served underarm with his right at 2-1 down in the third set. Munar won that set 6-1.

At 2-1 in the fifth, Atmane, who could move better little by little called for the physio and was refused. Treatment is not permitted for cramp, and the Frenchman’s argument was that what he had was not cramp.

“I tell him I have pain. Why is he saying no?” he said. “I know the rules, that’s why I’m asking, that’s why I’m calling you, because I know I cannot get treatment for cramp. It was not cramp, it was pain. Do you understand?”

The physio walked away without treating him. Atmane asked for his name and, according to reports of the exchange, told him to stop acting stupid. “So sorry. Wait, wait, come back,” he called after him to read his name on the credential.

The Frenchman’s record at the majors now reads: Australian Open 2024, first round, retired; Roland-Garros 2024, first round; Roland-Garros 2025, first round; Australian Open 2026, first round; Roland-Garros 2026, first round; Wimbledon 2026, first round; US Open 2026, first round. Every appearance, one match.

Ranked No. 46, Munar plays another Frenchman next, Arthur Rinderknech, the No. 26 seed.
