American Tommy Paul, the No 29 seed, defeated Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 in 3 hours and 10 minutes to move into the second round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday.

Paul, ranked No 34, will play the winner of the match between American Sebastian Korda and Argentinian qualifier Facundo Bagnis next.
