Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, advanced to the last eight of Wimbledon when Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 19 seed, retired at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Monday evening.
Sinner, ranked No 1, led 3-6, 5-7, 2-2 when Dimitrov, ranked No 21, pulled out for what seems to be a muscle injury at the right pectoral, suddenly revealed after an ace.
The Italian will face American Ben Shelton, the No 10 seed, next.
Jannik Sinner a set and even two for the first time this season at Wimbledon, after defeating Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero (6-1, 6-3, 6-1), Australian Aleksandar Vukic (6-1, 6-1, 6-3) and Luca Nardi (6-4, 6-3, 6-0).
The 34-year-old Bulgarian defeated Austrian Sebastian Ofner (6-3, 6-4, 7-6), Frenchman Corentin Moutet (7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5) and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-2, 6-3, 6-4) in the previous rounds of The Championships. It’s his fifth retirement in a row in Grand Slams.
