WTA rankings – Jabeur rises to No 4, Stearns makes top 100 debut

There was scant movement inside the WTA’s top 20 last week, but Tunisian trailblazer Ons Jabeur bucked the trend by lighting a spark under her 2023 season. The 28-year-old leapfrogs Caroline Garcia in this week’s rankings thanks to her title run in Charleston, where she defeated Belinda Bencic for her fourth career title.

Jabeur takes momentum onto the clay (+1)

Jabeur climbs to No 4, 41 points clear of fifth-ranked Caroline Garcia. She also jumps 34 spots in the Race to the WTA Championships, rising from 50 to 34.

The Tunisian has won 38 matches on clay since the start of 2020 (38-10) and hopes to continue her fortunes on the red clay across the pond in Europe.

Last year Jabeur amassed 1685 points across Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome, but faltered at Roland-Garros, where she lost in the first round to Magda Linette.

American Peyton Stearns makes top 100 debut (+ 27)

21-year-old Peyton Stearns is proving to be a quick learner on the WTA Tour. The former NCAA champion reached her maiden final at Bogota last week, in just her fifth WTA Tour event, and rises to a career-high 89 as a result.

Stearns, who attended college at the University of Texas, was barely inside the top 400 this time last year.

Pera hits career-high (+5)

A round of 16 performance at Charleston pushes American Bernarda Pera to a career-high ranking of 33. Russia’s Varvara Gracheva also hits another career-high, rising two spots to No 44 after a second round loss at Charleston.

American Caty McNally (+4 to 67), Spain’s Cristina Bucsa (+4 to 77), Austria’s Julia Grabher (+11 to 78) and Ukraine’s Diana Shnaider (+7 to 88) also hit new career-high rankings.
