BBVA Open Internacional De Valencia: Barthel advances to last 16
Mona Barthel benefited from the abandonment of Maria Timofeeva (6-4, 3-1) on Monday and will play Elvina Kalieva in the next round
German Mona Barthel advanced to the last 16 of the BBVA Open Internacional De Valencia when Russian Maria Timofeeva, the No 6 seed, retired on Monday.
Barthel, ranked No 215, led 6-4, 3-1 when Timofeeva, ranked No 101, pulled out on Monday afternoon.
The 33-year-old German will play Elvina Kalieva next.
