Birmingham Classic: Halep books spot in semi-finals, brushes aside Brit Boulter

Romanian Simona Halep, the second seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Birmingham Classic by winning against wildcard Katie Boulter 6-4, 6-1 at Edgbaston Priory Club on Friday evening.

Halep, ranked No 20, will face the winner of the match between Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia and Italian Camila Giorgi, the No 3 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the Romanian beat Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko (6-1, 6-4) and wildcard Harriet Dart (6-3, 6-2).

Boulter, ranked No 141, defeated American Alison Riske, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-3) and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia (7-6 (5), 6-1) in the previous rounds.
