BREAKING: Eala makes history as first Filipina to win the Mubadala DC Open

Filipino Alexandra Eala won the Mubadala DC Open tournament by defeating American Jessica Pegula, the top seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 on Monday evening.

Eala, ranked No 28, beat Japanese Naomi Osaka, the No 3 seed (6-4, 6-2), Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the second seed (6-3, 6-4), Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 7 seed (6-2, 7-6 (1)) and Chinese Qinwen Zheng (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) in the previous rounds.

Earlier in the tournament, Pegula, ranked No 3, defeated Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 4 seed (7-5, 6-4), Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 5 seed (6-3, 7-5) and Pole Magdalena Frech (3-6, 6-3, 6-0).
