Japanese Naomi Osaka advanced to the final of the Canadian Open by beating Dane Clara Tauson, the No 16 seed, 6-2, 7-6 (7) at the IGA Stadium in Montreal on Thursday night.
Osaka, ranked No 49, will face Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko next.
The Japanese won against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 10 seed (6-2, 6-2), Latvian Anastasija Sevastova (6-1, 6-0), Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 22 seed (6-2, 6-4), Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 13 seed (4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3) and Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault (6-4, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Rogers Cup, Tauson, ranked No 19, defeated American Madison Keys, the No 6 seed (6-1, 6-4), Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed (7-6 (1), 6-3), Ukrainian Yuliia Starodubtseva (6-3, 6-0) and Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-1, 6-2).
