Canadian wild card Victoria Mboko delivered the shock of the Montreal WTA 1000 on Saturday night, defeating World No. 1 Coco Gauff in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open.

The 18-year-old from Toronto, currently ranked number 85, played with poise well beyond her years, showcasing a fearless all-court game that left the 2023 US Open champion scrambling. Mboko saved all five break points she faced and broke Gauff four times in a 62-minute upset that electrified the home crowd (6-1, 6-4). Gauff had previously won their first head to head in Rome this year.

“I dreamed of moments like this,” said Mboko on court, addressing fans in both English and French. “Doing it here at home makes it ten times more special.”

Biggest win of Mboko’s career

The 20-year-old American showed visible frustration as Mboko, who started the season ranked No. 350, dictated points with clean baseline hitting and composed serving. For Mboko, it is her first appearance in the last eight of a top-tier tour-level tournament — and the biggest win of her career. She willl next Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

The victory sends Mboko into the spotlight as the first Canadian teenager to reach a WTA 1000 quarterfinal since Bianca Andreescu’s 2019 title run. The 18-year-old Canadian defeated Czech Marie Bouzkova (1-6, 6-3, 6-0), American Sofia Kenin, the No 23 seed (6-2, 6-3) and Australian Kimberly Birrell (7-5, 6-3) ahead of her victory. She’s just playing her sixth main draw event on the WTA Tour.

Gauff’s start of the US series season start in a difficult manner as she won against Russian Veronika Kudermetova (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Danielle Collins (7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2)) far from her best tennis.
