Latvian Anastasija Sevastova moved into the last eight of the Cluj-Napoca Open when Russian Elina Avanesyan, the No 6 seed, retired on Thursday at the BTarena.

Anastasija Sevastova led 6-2, 6-7 (5), 2-0 when Avanesyan, ranked No 61, pulled out on Thursday afternoon at the BTarena.

The 33-year-old Latvian will play the winner of the match between Dane Clara Tauson and Romanian Jaqueline Cristian next.

Ahead of her victory, Anastasija Sevastova won against Romanian wildcard Andreea Mitu (6-2, 6-3).

The 21-year-old Russian defeated German Tamara Korpatsch (6-4, 7-6 (3)) in the previous round of the Cluj-Napoca tournament.
