Wildcard Matilde Paoletti reached the last eight of the Firenze Ladies Open by edging out Nuria Brancaccio 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 on Thursday.
Paoletti, ranked No. 294, will face American Taylor Townsend next.
After losing the first set, the Italian home hope regained her composure and found some rhythm on her serve, taking the second set on a tiebreak before clinching the third for the match.
Matilde Paoletti beat German Jule Niemeier, the No 5 seed (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Brancaccio, ranked No 178, won against Heather Watson (6-3, 6-2).
