Firenze Ladies Open: Townsend moves into semi-finals

American Taylor Townsend reached the last 4 of the Firenze Ladies Open by winning against Italian wildcard Matilde Paoletti 6-3, 6-2 on Friday evening.

Townsend, ranked No 168, will face Italian Sara Errani, the No 6 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the American benefited from the abandonment of Croat Ana Konjuh (5-2) and defeated Romanian Ana Bogdan, the No 3 seed (6-0, 6-4).

Paoletti, ranked No 294, beat German Jule Niemeier, the No 5 seed (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) and edged out Nuria Brancaccio (2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4) in the previous rounds.
