Greek Maria Sakkari, the second seed, won against Italian Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open Akron on Wednesday night.
Sakkari improves to 4-0 against the Italian lifetime, and reaches her 12th career WTA 1000 quarter-finals.
“It’s always tricky to play against Camila because she hits the ball very big,” Sakkari said. “You don’t know how hard she’s gonna hit, it’s always tough – she’s an amazing player. I’m very pleased that even though I was a break down in the second set I managed to break back, hold serve and break again.
“It was a very solid match from my side and I’m very happy to be in the quarter-finals.”
Sakkari, ranked No 9, will play Colombian Emiliana Arango next.
The Greek defeated Australian Storm Hunter (6-2, 6-4) in the previous round.
Earlier in the tournament, Giorgi, ranked No 56, beat Egyptian Mayar Sherif, the No 14 seed (7-5, 6-3) and Spaniard Cristina Bucsa (6-1, 6-2).
