Iasi Open: Avanesyan battles past Martic to reach last eight

Russian Elina Avanesyan, the No 5 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Iasi Open by edging out Croat Petra Martic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 at the Ciric Sports Base.
Avanesyan, ranked No 76, will play the winner of the match between wildcard Elena-Gabriela Ruse and No 3 seed Jaqueline Cristian next.
The 21-year-old Russian beat Spaniard Leyre Romero Gormaz (6-1, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the Iasi tournament, Martic, ranked No 97, won against Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz (6-4, 6-4).
