Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia beat American wildcard Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 in California on Wednesday.
Garcia, ranked No 71, will play second seed Iga Swiatek next.
