Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, won against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 7-6 (8) to move into the quarter-finals of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday evening.
Sabalenka, ranked No 1, will face Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 8 seed, next.
The Belarusian defeated Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-2, 6-2) and American Sofia Kenin, the No 31 seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Rome tournament, Kostyuk, ranked No 27, won against Filipino Alexandra Eala (6-0, 6-1), Australian Daria Kasatkina, the No 14 seed (6-4, 6-2) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 24 seed (6-4, 6-2).
