Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 8 seed, beat Canadian Bianca Andreescu 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday evening.
Zheng, ranked No 8, will play the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk next.
Ahead of her victory, the 22-year-old Chinese won against Serb Olga Danilovic (6-1, 6-4) and Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 26 seed (6-3, 6-2).
Andreescu, ranked No 121, defeated Italian wildcard Federica Urgesi (6-0, 6-3), Croat Donna Vekic, the No 20 seed (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) and Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 11 seed (6-2, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Rome tournament.
