Linz Open: Vondrousova moves into semi-finals after Galfi retirement
Marketa Vondrousova benefited from the abandonment of Dalma Galfi (4-1) on Friday and will play the winner of the match between Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 8 seed, and German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam in the next round
Czech Marketa Vondrousova advanced to the semi-finals of the Linz Open when Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi retired at the Design Center Linz on Friday.
Vondrousova, ranked No 89, led 4-1 when Galfi, ranked No 92, pulled out at the Design Center Linz on Friday.
The two were meeting for the first time on tour, and currently sit only three places apart in the rankings – Vondrousova at No 88, Galfi at 91.
The Czech will play the winner of the match between Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 8 seed, and German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam next.
Ahead of her victory, Marketa Vondrousova won against Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova (6-3, 6-3) and Spanish qualifier Rebeka Masarova (6-1, 6-1).
The Hungarian defeated American Bernarda Pera, the No 7 seed (6-2, 7-6 (5)) and German wild card Eva Lys (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
