Madrid Open: Gauff beats Bencic to reach last eight

American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open by defeating Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2 at the Caja Mágica on Monday.
Gauff, ranked No 4, will face the winner of the match between Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 7 seed, and Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva next.
The 21-year-old American edged out Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (0-6, 6-2, 7-5) and won against Ann Li (6-2, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Bencic, ranked No 42, won against qualifier Zeynep Sonmez (6-0, 6-2), Dane Clara Tauson, the No 20 seed (7-5, 7-5) and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 16 seed (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (2)).
