Madrid Open: Haddad Maia advances to last 16

Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 11 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Madrid Open by defeating American Emma Navarro, the No 19 seed, 6-4, 6-4 at the Caja Magica on Saturday evening to reach the round of 16 at Madrid for the first time.

The top Brazilian, a semi-finalist at Roland-Garros last year, has now won 11 of her last14 matches on the clay.

Haddad Maia, ranked No 14, will face Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the Brazilian won against Italian qualifier Sara Errani (6-3, 6-2).

Navarro, ranked No 23, won against Argentinian Nadia Podoroska (6-2, 6-1) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
