American Madison Keys, the No 5 seed, defeated Croat Donna Vekic, the No 19 seed, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica on Tuesday.

Keys, ranked No 5, will face Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed, next, a repeat of their semi-final battle at this year’s Australian Open, won by the American.

Earlier in the tournament, the American won against Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-4, 6-3) and Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 30 seed (7-5, 7-6 (3)).

Vekic, ranked No 21, beat American wildcard Hailey Baptiste (6-4, 6-3) and American Emma Navarro, the No 11 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
