Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open by defeating Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 16 seed, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3 at the Caja Magica on Monday evening.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will face Croat Petra Martic, the No 27 seed, next.
Qinwen Zheng, the No 22 seed (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
