Mérida Open: Sonmez into semi-finals

Zeynep Sonmez edged out Mexican Renata Zarazua, the top seed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the Mérida Open at the Yucatan Country Club on Friday.
Sonmez, ranked No 127, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo and Russian Alina Korneeva next.
Ahead of her victory, Zeynep Sonmez beat Argentinian Maria Lourdes Carle, the No 6 seed (5-7, 6-1, 6-2) and Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot (7-6 (3), 6-3).
Zarazua, ranked No 62, won against American wildcard Akasha Urhobo (7-5, 6-2) and Pole qualifier Maja Chwalinska (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
