American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, won the Canadian Open trophy by defeating Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 15 seed, 6-1, 6-0 at Stade IGA in Montreal on Sunday night.

Pegula, ranked No 3, beat Kazakh lucky loser Yulia Putintseva (6-4, 6-4), Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-4, 6-0), No 6 seed Coco Gauff (6-2, 5-7, 7-5) and Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed (6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Samsonova, ranked No 18, beat Katerina Siniakova (4-6, 6-2, 6-3), Chinese Qinwen Zheng (6-3, 6-2), Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed (7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3), Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 12 seed (6-4, 6-4) and Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 3 seed (1-6, 6-1, 6-2).
