Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 4 seed, beat Canadian qualifier Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-2 to move into the quarter-finals of the Mubadala Citi DC Open on Friday evening.
Sakkari, ranked No 9, will play No 7 seed Madison Keys next.
In the previous round, Fernandez, ranked No 88, won against American Bernarda Pera (6-3, 7-5).
