Frenchwoman Alize Cornet won against Greek Maria Sakkari, the top seed, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Nottingham Open at Nottingham Tennis Centre on Wednesday evening.

Cornet, ranked No 72, will play the winner of the match between American qualifier Elizabeth Mandlik and Italian Camila Giorgi, the No 7 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Nottingham tournament, the 33-year-old Frenchman edged out wildcard Katie Swan (2-6, 6-1, 6-4).

Sakkari, ranked No 8, beat Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-2, 7-6 (6)) during the 32 of the Nottingham tournament.
