Top seed Sakkari falls to Haddad Maia in Nottingham quarter-final

Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 7 seed, won against Greek Maria Sakkari, the top seed, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the Nottingham Open at Nottingham Tennis Centre on Friday.

Haddad Maia, ranked No 48, will face Czech Tereza Martincova for a place in the final.

The Brazilian beat China’s Qiang Wang (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) and qualifier Yuriko Miyazaki (6-2, 7-6 [4]) in the previous rounds, while world No 5 Sakkari won against Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (6-2, 6-3) and Canadian Rebecca Marino (1-6, 6-3, 6-3).
