American Peyton Stearns defeated Croat Petra Martic, the No 9 seed, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 to reach the last eight of the Parma Ladies Open presented by Iren on Wednesday evening.
Stearns, ranked No 82, will face Mexican Renata Zarazua next.
The 22-year-old American won against Italian wildcard Jennifer Ruggeri (6-2, 6-1) in the previous round.
In the previous round, Martic, ranked No 81, beat American Varvara Lepchenko (4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2).
