Sakkari edges Garcia to reach Doha semis

Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed, edged out Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 3 seed, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) to reach the semi-finals of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Thursday evening.
Sakkari, ranked No 7, will play American Jessica Pegula, the second seed, next.
The Greek overcame an 0-3 deficit in her head-to-head with Garcia to reach the semis at Doha for the second consecutive year. Sakkari improves to 11-3 on the season while Garcia falls to 11-4.

In the previous rounds of the Doha Open, the Greek won against Chinese Qinwen Zheng (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-3, 6-2).
Garcia, ranked No 5, edged out Czech Karolina Muchova (6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4) in the previous round of the Doha Open.
