American wildcard Sloane Stephens beat Swiss lucky loser Jil Teichmann 6-1, 7-6 (2) to advance to the second round of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Tuesday evening.

Stephens, ranked No 52, will play No 3 seed Aryna Sabalenka next.
