Croat qualifier Donna Vekic advanced to the second round of the San Diego Open by beating Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (3), 6-1 at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Tuesday evening.
Vekic, ranked No 77, will face the winner of the match between Czech Karolina Pliskova and American qualifier Caroline Dolehide next.
