Ostapenko maintains momentum to reach Stuttgart final

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the final of the Stuttgart Open by beating Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-4 at the Porsche-Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Ostapenko, ranked No 24, will face the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 5 seed, next. It’s just her second ever final on clay, after her French Open triumph of 2017.

The Latvian won against Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska (6-3, 3-0 ret.), American Emma Navarro, the No 7 seed (7-5, 3-6, 6-2) and Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Alexandrova, ranked No 22, defeated Liudmila Samsonova (6-3, 6-3), No 6 seed Mirra Andreeva (6-3, 6-2) and American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed (6-0, 6-4).
