Spanish lucky loser Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated American Sloane Stephens, the No 9 seed, 6-1, 6-3 to move into the last 4 of the Tennis in the Land at Cleveland’s Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Thursday night.
Sorribes Tormo, ranked No 95, will play German Tatjana Maria next.
In the previous rounds, the Spaniard benefited from the abandonment of Katerina Siniakova (6-2, 4-0) and won against Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 3 seed (6-4, 6-1).
Stephens, ranked No 38, beat Lauren Davis (1-6, 6-3, 6-1) and Russian Mirra Andreeva (6-3, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
