American Sloane Stephens, the No 9 seed, defeated Russian Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-3 to reach the last 8 of the Tennis in the Land at Cleveland’s Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Thursday evening.
Stephens, ranked No 38, will play Spanish lucky loser Sara Sorribes Tormo next.
In the previous round, the American won against Lauren Davis (1-6, 6-3, 6-1).
Andreeva, ranked No 67, edged out German lucky loser Tamara Korpatsch (6-0, 3-6, 7-5) in the previous round.
