Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, advanced to the last eight of the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament by winning against Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday night.
It is her second career match win in Japan after her victory in the first round of the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021 against Mona Barthel, 796 days ago.
Swiatek, ranked No 2, will play Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 8 seed, next.
Hontama, ranked No 148, defeated Nao Hibino (6-2, 6-4) in the previous round.
