WTA Toronto: Impressive Townsend breezes past Ostapenko to reach quarter-finals

American lucky loser Taylor Townsend moved into the last eight of the National Bank Open by beating Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 4 seed, 6-2, 6-1 at the Aviva Centre.
Townsend, ranked No 71, will face the winner of the match between American Emma Navarro, the No 8 seed, and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 11 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the American benefited from the abandonment of Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the No 16 seed (6-3, 3-1) and won against Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic (6-0, 6-2).
Ostapenko, ranked No 11, defeated Spaniard Paula Badosa (3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
