Qualifier Taylor Townsend won against No 6 seed Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the last 8 of the Washington Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center on Thursday.
Townsend, ranked No 97, will face the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the top seed, and Canadian Leylah Fernandez next.
Taylor Townsend beat German Tatjana Maria (6-4, 7-5) in the previous round of the Washington tournament.
